Hanging out to dry
2026, latex sink, clothing line
The clothing line presents a strange moment of intimacy. For an instant, the innards are displayed to the outside for everyone to see. In this work three latex sinks are hanging out to dry. Sinks become the intimate objects where we shed and wash ourselves from our past. Due to a Portuguese monopoly, latex became a colonial product that helped mediate the country’s neutrality during World War Two. Of course, this is a disguised neutrality, embedded with violence. The sanctity of domesticity is sustained through exploitation. The sinks appear to be clogged and are devoid of a drain. At the same time, the latex reintroduces a certain liquidity onto the sink. The sinks are hanging out dry, but ultimately, they never will.
