Horen, zien, zwijgen: natte cel

2025 (190 x 30 x 160 cm): casted glass, metal, ceramic tiles, silicone, bathroom dirt

Natte cel is construction jargon for bathroom in Dutch, literally translating to “wet prison”. This sculpture features cast-glass bathroom tiles with protruding ears. The hostility of Dutch bathroom architecture – the small cramped spaces, lack of ventilation and windows, mold growth – is at the center of this work. The glass becomes an opaque wall where (societal) transparency is negotiated. The notion of “being normal” is constantly monitored in Dutch society through social control and subtle acts of violent surveillance found in domestic relations. The sterility and neutrality of the bathroom are threatened.
